oc brainworms, serving 1 of ???????????
welcome to me dumping my spaghetti (worldbuilding thoughts) onto a plate (this journal entry) and calling it a meal. tonight's special is "how the fuck magic works in my clusterfuck of a sandbox world"
general overview
- when i say sandbox world, i mean the setting in which i've pulled a decent number of the ocs i rp from. i'll go into more detail below because the magic brainworms are a part of this, but this started as me pointing at a link to the past and going "oh what if i did some mirror world bullshit too".
- lyric (
1yric ), jyoti (
twofacedlight ), and rosemary (
cerasister ), mars (
cerasinner ), and camellia (
sensesis ) are from the other.
- i'm not 100% set on rojo for lyric/jyoti/rosemary's world, but i'll be calling it that for now. cherry/mars/camellia's is called tapral
tapral
- put most simply, magic is born from desire. the stronger someone feels about something, the more power they can harness.
- way back in tapral's past, Bad Shit Happened that nilla's going to have to figure out at some point, prompting the survivors of whatever disaster occurred to obscure this truth for the sake of the future
- i have "pillars of devotion" written down in my ramble which i don't love the sound of, but i can revise that later lmao. but the pillars are god-like beings that were imagined to become the source of magic, so that there's some sort of limitation placed on a magic that seems literally limitless
- current belief is that magic is a gift from these higher beings, and the abilities you gain relate to the beings you pray to. so for example, the nameless guardian would correlate to healing and protection magic. there's numerous pillars but i can only think of two for certain right now lmfaoooooo
- the pillars' actual forms vary between them all, but none of them have physical forms that're capable of existing in tapral
- a big source of change and conflict in tapral comes from those who don't like the pillar belief system or think it's false
rojo
- at some point in tapral's past, a group began to imagine what a world that didn't rely on prayer for power would be like
- this strong, collective belief resulted in an entirely new place to be created, both within (as in a physical island) and distinct (but still connected) from tapral
- magic is innate, rather than gifted, specifically residing in the blood and bones of living beings. its concentration varies, and has gotten weaker as time goes on. at present, it's far more likely for someone to not have any magic
- magic, however, can be inherited. if someone drinks a potion containing a mage's blood, and keeps a fragment of their bone as a catalyst, then they are able to use a fraction of their magic. the more they take, the more power they can gain, but this method can't grant power that equals that of a mage. (three guesses as to which oc this relates to, and the first two don't count--)
- magic can also be found within natural things, like plants, crystals, and water, which can be used to imbue items with a weak magical property. modern day witches like rosemary use this in self-care goods to enhance a mood/state-changing property
